Comparison

Collecting wedding photos in a cloud folder: Google Photos, iCloud, Dropbox and co.

The folder is already there and costs nothing. Whether it stands up to eighty guests’ phones comes down to four questions — account, quality, limit, expiry.

Free, no subscription

Wedding album ‘Anna & Michael’ on a phone: a gallery instead of a file list in a cloud folder

Four questions the cloud folder usually fails on

The account already exists, the storage is paid for, a link is quickly sent. For eighty guests, four questions come up:

  • Does the guest need an account? Not with Dropbox file requests; with a shared iCloud album, yes; with Google it isn’t stated.
  • Does the original quality arrive? Not in shared iCloud albums: photos ‘am langen Rand auf 2048 Pixel reduziert’, video up to 720p — permanently.
  • How big is the limit? 15 GB free with Google, 5 GB with iCloud and OneDrive, 2 GB with Dropbox Basic.
  • When does it disappear again? WeTransfer deletes after 3 days on the free plan, SwissTransfer after 15 days.

What the table says in three sentences

The account question decides it

Dropbox file requests, WeTransfer and SwissTransfer ask for no account, iCloud for an Apple ID, and with Google it isn’t documented. With us, the link is enough.

iCloud costs you resolution

2048 pixels on the long edge is permanent. For a 20 × 30 cm print at the usual 300 dpi, that isn’t enough; it covers around 17 cm.

A folder is not a wall

A Live Wall for the projector isn’t documented for any of the seven tools. With us, it’s a link of its own.

And WhatsApp or Telegram?

WhatsApp sends videos at a maximum of 100 MB and 720p by default; Telegram takes 2 GB per file. The rest is on Sharing photos without a WhatsApp group.

And afterwards into your own folder

You don’t have to choose. Collecting happens here — one link, no account, full quality — and afterwards we put every photo and video into your own Google Photos or Google Drive. You connect the account, choose the event or an album, and the rest runs in the background: you can close the page.

All we’re allowed to do there is add — not read, not delete. Apple Photos goes through the device, because Apple offers no route into iCloud: the iPhone app creates an album in Photos, Safari hands over the originals through the share sheet, and iCloud syncs from there. Every route, screen by screen: Export photos.

The verdict

As soon as eighty guests are meant to contribute, the account question becomes a problem, and 2 to 15 GB free rarely covers a wedding with videos. An album solves both — opening the link is enough, and the plan is sized to the event. In four cases, that doesn’t hold.

When another tool is the better fit

  • Everyone uses the same brand and the loss of quality doesn’t matter: a shared iCloud album costs nothing and doesn’t expire.
  • The photographer is sending one big folder: SwissTransfer takes 50 GB per transfer, without an account.
  • Ten guests, few files, no video: a Dropbox file request is enough.
  • You only want to look at the photos, never print them.

Migumento is free until the event grows past 400 MB

The free plan is not a trial run: all guests, all photos, all videos, the Live Wall — and up to 400 MB of event size you download the originals too, for 6 months. For bigger celebrations there are one-off plans with 12 or 24 months from the unlock. No subscription.

Common questions

Can guests upload photos without an account of their own?

With Dropbox file requests, WeTransfer and SwissTransfer, yes. iCloud requires joining the album, and for Google it isn’t documented. With Migumento, the link is enough.

Do photos lose quality in a shared iCloud album?

Yes. Apple writes that shared photos are ‘am langen Rand auf 2048 Pixel reduziert’; videos go up to 720p.

Does ‘Dateien anfordern’ work on a personal OneDrive too?

According to Microsoft’s help page, no: the article covers OneDrive for Business and lists the feature as not available for ‘OneDrive für privat’.

What does an album cost instead of a folder?

Collecting is free, no matter how many guests come; you unlock once, from $23 — no subscription.

Can I get the photos into my own cloud afterwards?

Yes. You connect your Google account, and we copy every photo and video into your own Google Photos or Google Drive — in the background, in full quality. Apple Photos goes through the device: the iPhone app saves to an album in Photos, Safari to the library through the share sheet, and iCloud syncs from there.
